Eligibility

Could you use your super for dental? Let's find out.

This scheme exists specifically for people in tough situations — so don't count yourself out. Take the 60-second check. It's free, there's no obligation, and there's no wrong answer.

  • A guide, not a decision — the ATO decides eligibility
  • No documents needed to take the check
  • Whatever the result, we'll suggest a next step
60-second eligibility check Question 1 of 4

Have you been told you need major dental work — or are you in dental pain?

Do you have some funds sitting in your superannuation?

Is paying for the treatment out of pocket a real struggle right now?

Could you get the medical and dental reports and an itemised quote the ATO needs? (Usually a GP and a dentist — we’ll explain.)

It could be worth a free check.

A guide only, not a decision. Eligibility is determined by the ATO and your super fund.

In plain English

You may be eligible if…

No jargon, no fine print. If most of these sound like you, it's well worth a free check.

  • You've been told you need major dental work
  • You're in dental pain, discomfort or distress
  • You (or a dependent) have no other way to pay
  • You have some funds in your super
  • You can get a GP report, a dentist’s report, and an itemised dental quote (we help arrange all three)

Don't have a dentist or GP sorted? That's fine — we help with both.

What the ATO needs

What the ATO needs to assess it

The dental rules need two medical reports plus a quote. The reports and the treatment are your practitioners’ call — the admin is the part we help with.

1 · Two medical reports

A report from your GP and one from a registered dental practitioner — each confirming, in their own clinical judgement, that treatment is needed to relieve acute or chronic pain (or treat a life-threatening illness or injury).

2 · An itemised quote

A fully itemised quote from your dentist — each item, code and cost listed, on their letterhead, addressed to you and dated.

3 · A complete application

Everything assembled and lodged properly so it isn’t delayed or bounced back — the admin we help with. We don’t write the reports or decide your treatment.

Treatments

What usually qualifies — and what doesn't

Often qualifies

These may qualify only when genuinely needed to relieve pain or restore function:

  • Implants
  • Crowns
  • Oral surgery & extractions
  • Root canals
  • Reconstructive work — only when needed to relieve pain or restore function
Usually doesn't
  • Purely cosmetic veneers
  • Teeth whitening
  • Elective cosmetic-only work

Cosmetic work doesn’t become eligible just because it’s bundled with necessary treatment. The narrow exception is cosmetic work with a genuine medical purpose — like restoring function after trauma. Whether treatment is necessary is your dentist’s clinical call and the ATO’s decision, not ours.

For your family too

Applying for a partner or child.

You can apply to release your super for a dependent's treatment — for example, a child's or partner's dental work — with evidence of your relationship and their condition. Many parents come to us for exactly this.

What you'd need for a dependent

  • Evidence of the relationship (e.g. child or partner).
  • Evidence of their dental condition and treatment need.
  • The same medical and dental reports + itemised quote — we help organise them.

A couple of things worth knowing

Applying for a dependent

You can apply to release your super for a dependent's treatment — a child or partner — with evidence of the relationship and the condition. We'll tell you exactly what's needed.

We’re not tax advisers

We manage your application — not your finances. For anything about tax or your retirement savings, we’ll point you to a registered professional, and we’ll never pressure you into a decision. Accessing super early is a last resort — it’s worth first considering a payment plan with your dentist, savings, or other options. Early withdrawals are taxed and permanently reduce your retirement savings.

Still not sure? That's what the free call is for.

A short, plain-English chat often surfaces a path you didn't know you had. No pressure, no judgment.

Super Smiles is a trading name of MEROITI, TUMAI (ABN 75 527 278 804). We help everyday Australians prepare and organise an application for the early release of super on compassionate grounds — the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) program — for dental treatment. We are not financial advisers, not the ATO, and not a tax or legal adviser; nothing on this site is financial, tax or legal advice. Eligibility and approval are decided solely by the ATO and your super fund — we cannot and do not guarantee any outcome. Accessing super early is taxed, reduces your retirement savings, and is intended as a last resort. Please consider your own circumstances and seek independent advice.
